I have been dealing with a situation off line for a few months now. Essentially I have paid for a service so expect a certain level of service for which I paid. Almost daily phone calls leaving a message on the answering machine go unanswered. If I am very lucky a daily phone call will get through to an actual person of which I am given excuses or a promise that never comes to pass. And so I am stuck in this perpetual never ending cycle that I paid for and yet am getting nowhere. What does this have to do with blogging?
In many ways a reader is paying for the privilege of visiting your blog through bandwidth charges or at the very least their time. In return they expect a certain return and that is a blog with current content as well as enough content worth reading through. Comments left can be likened to messages left on an answering machine. Those commenting expect some type of answer or at the very least that you the blogger have acknowledged their comment. Readers do not want excuses for not following though on something you have told them you will do. If you tell your readers you will post information on subject X on Monday then either do it or don't tell them you will do it. Readers do not want false promises either. One of the worst things you can do as a blogger is to say "I promise to make a daily post" then don't follow through. You can bet your bottom dollar that your readers will remember promises made that haven't been fulfilled by moving onwards. Don't let your blog become a perpetual never ending cycle of broken promises and unfulfilled intentions. Otherwise your readers will be left frustrated, angry and move on.
