According to some sources meta tags are not all that important but my experience was accidently deleting them off of one of my blogs resulted in an immediate drop of traffic. Since that happened I've been paying attention to the meta tags on my blogs. Even if Google doesn't acknowledge meta tags, other search engines likely do. So it is a good idea to have meta tags on your blog just to help get the attention of other search engines.
Meta tags are a bit more complicated than they appear especially the keyword meta tags. These tags in particular need to be updated on a regular basis. The reason being is keyword search terms change so you want to keep you main tags up to date. Even just changing out these tags to better reflect your blog is a good idea from time to time.
