Somewhere between a blog directory and a link farm there is a beast called a blog aggregator. A blog aggregator is generally quite niche focused. It's larger than a blog roll, smaller than a blog directory and not just a collection of links. To get your blog listed in a blog aggregator it has to be approved by admin and a badge with link to the aggregator needs to be added to your blog. There's usually a set criteria your blog must meet in order to be accepted into the blog aggregator. There may or may not be a fee for membership. Unlike a blog directory (aka blog version of a phone book), blog roll or link farm, a blog aggregator is set up in such a manner that it offers members other activities such as forums, it's own blog, contests and so much more. So a blog aggregator in essence becomes a niche community within the blogosphere. It can be an excellent method for blog promotion and meeting other bloggers.
